Legacy Nature Preserve
I had quite a nice time out at the Legacy Nature Preserve, alone. I walked about a mile through the watery salt brush, along flooded dirt roads, along some canals, taking pictures of a big storm cloud over Layton. In an otherwise clear sky, this cloud was dumping some real snow on the benches. Then it started to cloud up again from the west, and right at sunset I had about a minute of break in the clouds before the sun went down. I was mentally scrambling to set up a nice shot, when along came 2 men in little motorboats down the canal out of nowhere. It caused me stress. It turned out to be two men trapping otters and the like. Well then after dark I really had a good time shooting the airplanes, the moon, stars and some radio towers.

Judging the 2008 Monte L. Bean Natural History Museum Photography Competition
This was a great experience, the first time I had judge a real photo contest. I earned this opportunity because I was a winner last year. Two other judges and I spent a few hours systematically evaluating the entries, and narrowing the choices down to the final winners. I learned a lot about contests. For instance, we had to toss out great photos because they were not submitted under the correct guidelines.
A behind-the-scenes experience is invaluable. After the judging, Randy Baker and his wife took us for a nice steak dinner at Ruby River Steak House.
